I had a pretty interesting day with AT&T on Sunday:

- No Internet connectivity on my iPhone
- My phone did not ring with an incoming call from my parents
- I could not retrieve the voicemail that was left for me
- Attempts to call my parents back resulted in the call being dropped no less than 3 times.

And this was all in 5 minutes.

Since my contract with AT&T had expired a couple of weeks before that (and I had an iPhone 3G, which really showed its age with IOS 4.1), I figured it was time to get a newer/faster phone, and fire AT&T as my cellphone company at the same time. One short walk to the Apple Store later, and this is the result:

Dear AT&T: YOU'RE FIRED!

I find that Verizon's service is much nicer than AT&T's was. No random cases of the Internet not working here, the performance is quite consistent no matter where in the suburbs or city I am.

Having a phone that does video is nice, too. :-)

I've had pretty good luck with them out here around York as well. I did some preliminary research when I switched over to android, because we live in the middle of a gigantic divot in the ground. Apparently Verizon was not only the only one with a tower in said hole in the ground, but also with most of the towers within a 15 mile radius.

Yeah, they're a bit expensive (upwards of $150 for unlimited data/text and meh minutes on my plan, with a media phone for my wife and a cheapie web plan there), but their signal is mostly what makes up for it. Just pray you never need their tech support/customer service, because it's a nightmare (you can't get a human voice to save your life from the automatic lines or calls they send out, and god forbid you have a billing issue, you might as well borrow someone else's phone to call them for customer service, it's faster.)

There's both a Verizon Store and an Apple Store here in Ardmore, so I've got options if things go wrong. :-)

Just curious, is there any way to tell whether the service improvement is due to the updated phone, or the network itself? And have you missed the ability to have a call and do data stuff at the same time?

Well, the old phone would have times when webpages/Twitter/etc. just wouldn't load at all, despite there being a 3G signal available. No matter how slow the old phone was, pages that don't load after a minute+ probably aren't due to the phone itself.

Nope. Never really did this before. And even if I did, having reliable Internet connectivity on the phone is worth the trade.

I ditched AT&T last year when I was unable to get a signal in my apartment between 6PM and midnight, every evening, like clockwork. Full bars all other times, so it was obviously a capacity problem. I have an unlocked GSM phone, so all I had to do was sign up for T-Mobile and switch SIM cards.

And now AT&T is in talks to buy T-Mobile. :/

What? You didn't buy one of the femtocells that AT&T wanted you to buy? :-)

AT&T must be losing a lot of customers once Verizon offered their Iphone.
