Things from the last few days...
Mar. 30th, 2004 03:30 pmI had a pretty uneventful weekend. I spent most of it trying to get RedHat 9.0 installed on my laptop. Or rather, trying to get the CDs copied so that I could put my original install disks in a safe place. I had some difficulties copying the end of the CDs, so I ended up having to mount the ISO images, copy the files off of them, copy the corruptted RPMs over from the original CDs, then reburn the CDs. Along the way I discovered that in order for the disks to pass their (not mandatory) tests, I had to install and run the implantisomd5 program that is part of the anaconda-runtime package. What an annoyance.
After finally getting RedHat 9 on my laptop, I saw how it slow it was there, too. Ugh. Myabe I'll try Motif (mwm) or Tab Window Manager (twm) instead and see how they work out for me. I was just going to use that laptop for some programming and test projects anyway.
I got a bit of a surprise this morning. As I left my apartment to go to work, I saw some activity in the hallway and learned that my neighbor was moving out. I chatted with her a bit, and since she knows I'm into computers, asked if I wanted "this unused monitor from her old machine". So now I have another 17" monitor. :-) She also had "this old file cabinet" that she was going to throw out and gleefully let me have. Just in time, too, as my my current amount of paperwork is getting too big to fit in a single file drawer anymore.

taral and
randomzen, I signed up on Orkut a few days ago. It's an interesting site, similar to Live Journal in that you can have friends lists and the such, but it's more about social networks then about posting content. You can define how well you know your various friends and do searches based on peoples' physical locations and similar criteria. It also has a neat feature in that you can flag specific friends as having a "crush" on them. The information is kept secret UNLESS they also have listed that they have a crush on you. At that point, Orkut sends both of you a message, and the rest is up to you. :-)
Finally, if there are any doubts whatsoever about what a horrible thing drunk driving is, please view this LJ entry by
