Busy busy busy busy *crackle?*
Jul. 31st, 2004 01:08 amWow, I've been a busy cat for the last week or so. Random things:
-
Work has been my big thing. We got an exciting new project assigned to us. By "we", I mean myself and 2 other programmers. And since I know the particular technologies we're using the most, I get to bring the other two guys up to speed on things. It's interesting how we're working on different aspects of the project, but still have been cooperating on architecture and the like. It's fun!

I finally got DSL installed at my apartment! 1.5m/384k. It's really nice to have pages load in a decent amount of time, and to be able to download a GenToo ISO image in a little over an hour. :-) Getting it set up was painless. I just plugged in the modem, and... connected. It also means that I have my landline back. If anyone wants the number, please e-mail me.

Somewhere in there, I hooked up with
thefoxes again. We worked our way up to about episode 90 or Naruto and ate something like 5 POUNDS of nachos. I can feel my arteries hardening just thinking about it!

I finally ordered a Powerbook. The machine I ordered was a 15" machine with a Superdrive and 1x512 Megs of RAM. I also grabbed The JBL Creature II speakers, a carrying case, and Apple Care. I pretty much got everything BUT the machine itself. I've been told that it's all boxed up, waiting to be shipped out, which will happen Real Soon Now.

Speaking of the *crackle*, something disturbing happened tonight. As I getting ready to set up my new speakers, my work laptop, which had been playing a stream suddenly made a crackling sound and went silent. Sure enough, the audio on it doesn't work anymore. The internal speakers don't work, nor does anything I plug in. I sometimes hear a faint crackling, but that's it. This persists through reboots, and nothing shows up in the kernel log, either. This is a complete and total pain in the arse, because until recently, the machine worked great. Oh well. The machine is a Dell Inspirion 5150, BTW. I warned ya!
As a workaround, I found a Knoppix 3.2 CD, fired up my P3-450 laptop, and was able to play some streams over it and use it to test out the JBL speakers. The speakers do infact rock. I'm working on downloading Knoppix 3.4 to try out. Only 15 minutes left on that download. :-)

I've decided to be a proper homosexual and start drinking protein shakes in the morning. I've also been drinking one after the gym. I'll try this for a few weeks and see if it affects my muscle mass or overall weight. Should be interesting.
That's all for now. More news when I get my Powerbook!
I just can't resist.
