For those of you who are starting/returning to college in a few days,
you might find this thread on Slashdot interesting. There's some
practical advice in there for suviving college.

And yes, you can insure your desktops and laptops against theft.
Check on your parents' homeowner's insurance policy. If there is no
protection for your property while traveling/in school, talk to the
insurance company, you may be able to get a rider attached to the
policy.

And for God' sake, if you drink, drink in moderation. You would like
to actually REMEMBER your first sexual experience, wouldn't you? :-)

Yeah. The best advice is to lock your door, if you're in a traditional dorm. My freshman year, I know a couple guys not only left their door unlocked, but left it wide open as they both went to the bathroom to shower before bed. And someone came in and stole a bunch of CDs and other stuff. Duh?

I had this one guy who lived across the hall from me who once came in my room and just started looking in the closet. I had closed the door but hadn't locked it because I went to the bathroom, which was next door. I came back and found him looking in my closet. Why? He just liked to freak people out.

But the school paper was full of stories of people coming through the dorms (especially since my school wasn't in the best part of town) and just trying doors. And lots of them would be open. And it wouldn't keep happening if people couldn't be bothered to turn the latch or turn the key. I remember being woken up in the middle of the night by someone turning my doorknob, although I'd locked my door before going to sleep. It happened all the time, but no matter how much the administrators screamed about locking your doors, people kept leaving them unlocked, even when they were fast asleep. Heck, sometimes people were just so drunk they'd come in and collapse, only to discover they were in someone else's room.

I hated having to lock my door to take a leak, but it was better than having my stuff stolen or messed with.
