This has actually been scientifically proven. It turns out that humans are of a size such that our table and counters are placed at a height where things falling off of them have time to rotate to an upside down position, but not high enough that they have time to rotate around to right side up again.

but if you only buy a /half/ sandwich, then you have one end nice and flat, providing enough friction with the air to prevent complete rollover.

It's not an air friction thing; over the distances involved, air friction isn't really an issue. As the sandwich slides off the counter, the fact that gravity is pulling down on the whole sandwhich and the table is only pushing up on part of it imparts a torque on the sandwhich that causes it to spin.

Err... originally I meant to write a witty comment here, but I got kind of distracted, as you can see. Anyhow, let me say that I like Subway and let me thank you for getting me to learn words I've never heard about and won't remember after thirty minutes. :)
