So, I wake up this morning and I find a voicemail on my cellphone marked as "urgent". So I listen to it, and here's what I heard:

http://filepile.claws-and-paws.com/telemarketers/phonecall.mp3

At first, it sounds like an innocent message that was left for the wrong number. But about halfway through the message this lady begins to pimp out the website christiancafe.com.

I believe that this was in fact a deliberate telemarketing attempt from these people, for the following reasons:

  • The person mentions the URL of the website twice, and makes sure to spell it out the second time
  • In the 30 seconds before she starts talking about the site, she tells some "story" with a religious theme. Presumably so that people who aren't interested will hang up by then. (Unless you're someone like me, who actually listens to their voicemails)
  • After mentioning the website, they proceed to say what a great thing it is, and there's something about how they say it, some gut feeling, that makes the message just sound "suspicious" to me.
  • I've seen email spammers use this trick before, wherein they would send a message that looked like a private email to a third party, and put a blurb at the end of the email about some "money making opportunity".

While poking around their site, I also noticed that they offer a free trial membership. Hmm... this gives me ideas....

Hello,

I'm posting to let you know that ChristianCafe.com does not participate in telemarketing. I think this may have, in fact, been a real phone call but she had the wrong number.

Thanks,

Fred
