Funny, I was reading about rootkits on the flight over to MFF. Methinks someone read the same book or one like it and decided that they had the skillz to do something cool without understanding the ramifications (both technical and social).
Part of this is of course Sony mishandling it. They'd have lost some face if they just did the right thing when caught and provided a free uninstaller - like they'd have had significant numbers of people downloading it anyway! But then, if they were the sort to do the right thing, they wouldn't have put this stuff on in the first place.
