I was just watching Terminator 3, and in the last 5 minutes of the movie, when people are making calls on the radio, I caught one of the military operators calling CQ. Who'd have thought?

I also found this webpage that talks about the power relationship in decibel ratings, and it also had this neat graphic that displays it:

Another interesting way to look at it is "Every 3 dB doubles your power".
 0dB 1 W
 3dB 2 W
 6dB 4 W
 9dB 8 W
12dB 16 W
...

You may also want to check out this discussion (http://www.softwright.com/faq/engineering/FIELD%20INTENSITY%20UNITS.html) of antenna gain and field intensity that shows the dBi and dBd relationship.

It should be noted that the dimensionless power relation of decibel are different (by a factor 2) when you're speaking about audio intensity as compared to when you're speaking about power (voltage).

Confused the heck out of me for a while. It's all fine when you're a physicist, because then it's always relative power, but when you're an engineer the two different relations are used interchangably in one big wonderful mess.
