From Reuters:

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - New Jersey, trying to overcome its reputation for corruption, traffic and toxic waste dumps, has rejected dozens of sardonic and sarcastic entries in a contest for a new tourist slogan.

A list of five possible slogans released on Wednesday leaves out "New Jersey: We can always use another relative on the payroll," and "Come to New Jersey: It's not as bad as it smells."

Anyone from New Jersey care to clarify? :-P

My sister and her husband live in New Jersey, and discovered first-hand how bad its underbelly is when he ran for public office. Bribe offers, death threats, the works.

Disregarding the politics and corruption, Jersey is logically a pretty decent place. Especially if you avoid North Jersey. South Jersey has beaches, casinos, nice houses, and all the construction on 295 is pretty much gone now I believe, at least through the parts I drive.

North Jersey on the other hand has factories that stink up the turnpike, traffic jams up the wazoo, and the improper plural pronoun "yous guys."

A lot of Pennsylvanians may try to laugh at Jersey but I'd chalk it up to local pride. Honestly, there isn't much PA can say about itself besides groundhogs, a useless bell, expensive-as-all-heck toll roads, lots of freaking hills, and a plethora of urban radio stations. What can we REALLY say we're better at Jersey in? "Ha ha...We have taller buildings?"

Of the slogans they narrowed it down to, I'm voting for "Come and See for Yourself." The rest are just way too bogus to seriously consider. :/

(EDIT: On second thought, scratch that. I ain't giving out my full name and home address jsut to vote on a stupid slogan!)

You're right, re: North Jersey vs. South Jersey.

Story time! When I was 18, I drove a cab in suburban NY (Westchester County). I had a fare to Atlantic City (!) -- I think it was a mafioso trying to show off for his father-in-law, who didn't care for him. Anyway, the trip down the Garden State Parkway was a real eye-opener -- truly beautiful.

It was a $300 fare in 1986. I got a $75 tip, and the nice father-in-law guy invited me in for a drink of water and to see his original Ansel Adams print (!). I still remember his name.

> South Jersey has beaches

Eh, mixed experiences there.

> casinos

Las Vegas has gotta be 10x better, even tho' I haven't been there.

> nice houses

unaffordable

>North Jersey on the other hand has factories that stink up the turnpike

Just set the air conditioner to "Recirculate" between exit 12 and 13A and it's not an issue.

> traffic jams up the wazoo

Depends on where you're driving and when.

> and the improper plural pronoun "yous guys."

The English language lacks a distinctive second-person plural form. We are merely expanding the language to resolve deficiencies. Southerners do the same thing, y'all know about that?

KIss her where it smells funny...

the worst part is they spent a quarter mill trying to come up with a new one, then they gave up and asked the citizenry via the newspapers a month or so ago. I sent in "NJ: What the %$&# you lookin at?" for kicks.

If that is truly the case then you would say "Yous" instead of adding the word "guys" to make "Yous guys." "You guys" is already sufficient in making the distinction between the singular and plural "You." :)
