Homework assignment for this weekend!
Sep. 12th, 2003 02:21 pmOkay furs, there's a homework assignment for this weekend. I'd like each of you to spend 10 minutes of your time reading the LJ of
being_homeless. I don't think 10 minutes is a huge amount of time, I'm sure everyone can spare it at some point this weekend. To get you started, here is a quote from Crystal's journal:
There will be a written test on Monday.
And reading her journal might just change how you feel towards homeless people.
[...] did you ever stop to think that maybe there just are homeless people in your area and you just haven't realized it? IfI was in your area and you saw me chilling out on town you wouldn't think twice that I could be homeless. but I am. What you don't see are the 'visibly homeless' people in your area. The ones with carts loaded with belongings, sleeping outside, begging, or the dirty drunk people staggering around. But homelessness is everywhere. just in some areas (cities especially) the homeless tend to migrate because of an abundance of services and shelters. The well dressed person on the bus next to you could be homeless. You may have coworkers that are too ashamed to tell anyone that they are homeless. The cashier at the grocery store might be homeless. Or a classmate of yours could be homeless. The homeless are everywhere. Most of us don't stand out in a crowd. It's not tattooed to our forehead. Many of us try to come across as 'normal' in society by going to work, school, appointments etc. but then when night falls we have no place of our own. Some homeless people sleep in cars, others in shelters or on a friends couch. And some stay outside. Just because there aren't any 'visably homeless' in your area doesn't mean that there are no homeless. It's that the homeless may be trying their best to fit into society, but are to ashamed to admit they are homeless to others because they don't want to be judged or stereotyped.
