To sum up the article, the FBI invoked the PATRIOT act and requested some library records and the affected librarians fought back in court. Even though the government's case was struck down by the judge (one of those "activist judges", no doubt), they appealed the case.
While the case was being appealed, it could not be discussed. This means that the librarians could not give testimony while congress was debating renewing the PATRIOT act. Yet mysteriously, as soon as the PATRIOT act was reauthorized by Congress, the government stopped appealing the case and only then were the librarians allowed to discuss the case in public.
Nothing like dragging on court cases to muzzle your opposition.
Also from the article, "9,254 National Security Letters were issued in 2005 involving 3,501 people." I leave it as an exercise to the reader to determine if there are 3,501 library card carrying terrorists in this country or not.
