I wonder if this is how the creators of WINE felt?

When I get my 160GB hard drive upgrade I'll prob do this. Until then I'll just watch others iron out the kinks. There still is a problem loading the ATI video drivers in XP. It may have to do with what Narf did to get VGA support during the install process. I have no doubt that by summer there will be a complete syspreped installer package that has the various drivers in the OEM driver folder sitting there ready to be detected during install. I can't wait to play Civ IV on my MacBook Pro. :x)

BWAHAHAHAHA!

It's reportedly the fastest damn Windows laptop anywhere, and that's without working video!

Ooh, they got XP to run... on an Intel PC! I'm impressed. And it's fast!
Wow, yeah. Hang on.
[uninstalls all teh device drivers, and all system services and programs]
Holy fuck! Look at the speed increase! Bejayzus!

Yeah. you got to hand it to apple, they make some great hardware. Look at those Toshiba hard drives, ATI grpahics cards , Intel CPUs and Motherboards they make.

Damn, if only hardware like that were available to everyone.

The only thing roughly different between the hardware that Apple is running and say Acer is EFI and a updated firmware on the ATI video card. There isn't any special "magic" on a Mac that would allow Windows to run faster. Something like 97% of what is in a Macintel now a days is off the shelf parts. (Pretty sure EFI was probably tweaked to heck and gone though.)

Hear here. :)

Besides, not counting all the other Core Duo laptops which have been around a lot longer than the MacBookProThingyMaJiggy's shipping date... for ultimate speed on a laptop, you need one of the two new 19" SLI-enabled notebooks (http://www.widowpc.com/2006/02/sli_laptop.php).

We'll quietly ignore that it's only 500grams away from not being carry-on luggage - assuming a 19" footprint fits inside that dinky little luggage tester at the airport - but calling Generic Vendor-parts Core-Duo Laptop X 'the fastest on earth' is a load of tripe. ;)

Apple have done some innoative things though - Look at the HD's "drop" sensor they invented. Such a shame IBM Retroactively copied them several years previously. And they're the first (discounting Sony) to put a camera in the laptop's lid!

Point me to someone who did the MagSafe (http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/design.html) before Apple did. How about the backlit keyboard? Any other laptops with optical audio? In all seriousness, I'd love to see earlier examples of that sort of thing.

It still disappoints me that they removed the FireWire 800 connector, though I suppose my internal drive isn't fast enough. But why, oh why did they have to cut the S-Video? I actually use that!

Sony PEG UX has a back lit keyboard - it's amber. And back lit keyboards have been around for a long time before Apple jammed one into a notebook.
The Magsage connector though is quite novel.
As for the optical audio... Creative sell a PCMCIA card with one.

So basiclaly you're saying that Apple havean optical audio jack and a manetic power connector (that apparently occasionally busts into flames).

They also have this little thing called Mac OS X. You may have heard of it.

But yes. The hardware is rather mundane, just put together in a very good way so as to make quite a nice whole. I use my current PowerBook for editing video and music, and I would love to have the optical audio & al.

As for the MagSafe connector "bursting into flames", this seems to be extremely rare, as there has only been one case (so far as I've read, and Wikipedia agrees). I'd like to have a bit more documentation than one single person claiming one single instance of it before declaring it a problem with the connector.

By "It has OSX" you mean "It has Darwin BSD UNIX and a fancy GUI"

Actually, no. I mean that it has NeXTStep, with a newer GUI, better frameworks, better development tools, a more mature kernel, a better filesystem, better launching/initialization system (Goodbye, init! You will not be missed.) ...

And the GUI is fancy, I'll give you that point.

While the OS beneath is indeed based on BSD, it is disingenuous at best to imply that it is simply "BSD UNIX". Similarly, it is dishonest to say that Windows xp is DOS or even NT4. It has been altered in some rather extreme ways. If you'd like, I could go into these changes in great detail. I somehow think that's not what you want, though, since you already seem so assured that Macs are inferior.

I fully agree that there are plenty of people who ascribe to Apple more than they have actually done. They have, however, done some remarkable things.
