I used multiple desktops for a while, but they never really did it for me, so now one of the first things I do when I install a new system for myself is set the number of desktops to 1 and remove the desktop switcher app(let)
I love having multiple desktops. In terms of regular use, I tend toward four (one for background tasks I want to watch, one for shell work, one for file management/image editing/etcetera, and one for daily Internet usage).
