Some folks might have seen this drama about FurFest Northwest over on [livejournal.com profile] artists_beware.

I just wanted to clarify that the convention's Chair, one [livejournal.com profile] rex_beowulf, is in no way related to [livejournal.com profile] rexxwolfe. The former lives in Idaho while the latter lives in Canada (and is an upstanding individual).

In other news, horror movies would be shorter if there were guns involved.

Oh yeah, to add:

FurFest Northwest is in no way related to Midwest FurFest as we found out about the con by seeing a flyer for it at Anthrocon.

Teh Drama llama rides again!

Sheesh, some people can be mean and condescending, believing they are just "asking questions".

Yep, that's one of the "pleasures" of running a con. Dealing with mean people comes with the territory.

That being said, I was disappointed most of all with the Chairman's reactions to the questions, including the legal threats he made.

Well, no one is perfect.

I can understand how agrivated he got from having someone who had no connection to his con and had no plans whatsoever in attending, not even having spoken with them about his concerns FIRST, disparaging his efforts.

Though one of the things I've taken away in working with FC is to deal with issues directly, out of the public poo flinging forum, and then releasing the end results if they are needed at all.

I think everyone would be better off if people just brought concerns calmly and directly to those they have them with and discussed them before hanging dirty laundry out to dry.

I'm gonna have to disagree here. Does it bother me when people talk about Anthrocon without apporaching us first? Sure. But it happens ALL THE TIME. If we worked ourselves up into a frenzy every time someone said something bad or inaccurate about us we'd have all died from heart attacks by now. In order to run a con, you need to have (or grow) a really thick skin, because you will hear all sorts of complaints about some aspect or another of your convention.

Do you mean like [livejournal.com profile] sr_foxley did? End result: his post was deleted from the convention's forums and when he inquired about it (http://community.livejournal.com/artists_beware/87990.html?thread=1549494#t1549494), the Chairman became belligerent with him. Having your post deleted and being attacked when you mention it will only encourage people to NOT come to the convention with any concerns.

It sounds to me like the con chair really wanted to run an honest, fun convention for everybody...but he didn't have a single clue what he was doing nor did he seem to have the motivation to defend it in the end. Am I close?

What? I wasn't insulting Canadians in that post. I was complimenting one, as a matter of fact.

I'm not defending his handling of it, but saying I understand how it happened. Someone of a very thin skin would break under these conditions.

Unfortunately that seems to be quite a lot of people.

Well, I can't really say I know [livejournal.com profile] rex_beowulf, but he is the bf of a friend of mine so I'd have to assume he's a decent guy.

For the con, yeah he was not that great in answering the concerns, rumors, and instigations but that I see as a lack of experience though could also be he was out of his element. I would also have to assume that when a con is in its infancy, the added stress of having no idea whether it will sink or swim has gotta make things even tougher. As many have stated, a number of cons are started when a furmeet outgrows itself, so you'd at least have an idea that there's interest - this sounded more like the idea to fill a void left by another con. Even with relatively minor issues, as seen by the drama not too long ago between the two upcoming NJ cons, can be rough - even moreso on someone that has more ambition than experience. But they did make some errors, running before they learned to walk.

Seems to me that a lot of new cons have been started in last few years to fill perceived voids, some succeed and obviously others don't - it's debatable whether having so many new cons is good overall.
