Or rather, does anybody have suggestions on how I can get my voicemails from Verizon Wireless into MP3s other than playing them over my phone and using a microphone? (as that will cause interference/distortion)

I got my first ever telemarketing call to my cellphone today. TWO of them, in fact. From the same car dealership. One call was a recorded message with no way to opt-out. The second call was from a sales guy who lied about why he was calling (You hear I'm "in the market" for a new car? I think not!) and was nice enough to leave his full name.

And yes, I'm not above using a little public ridicule when dealing with telemarketers. :-)

Call your voicemail through VoIP which is capable of recording the call, such as gizmo (http://www.gizmoproject.com/).

Could you use something like Skype to dial your mobile number and access your voicemail, and then have a program running to capture sound card audio into a WAV file?

Go from the headset jack on the phone into your recorder. If you've got a bluetooth phone with no headset jack, you're out of luck.

I'd buy a cheapo wired headset for the phone, and hack it to get the right connector. Then with clip leads, I'd go tight to an RCA plug going into my tape deck. If that didn't work too well, a series resistor or a matching transformer may be required.

File a lawsuit and subpoena the digital data from your carrier. :)

That's a lawsuit against the telemarketers, not your carrier.

Mmm, not really. That first one sounds like it might be multiple violations in one, at $500 a shot.

Yeah, I was going to say, it is illegal to telemarket a cellular phone. Get 'em.

You could conference in my voicemail with your voicemail and just play it when my voicemail starts recording - packet8 emails me a wav recording of all of my messages that sound very good.

A computer with a bluetooth adapter can be used as a hands free headset for a cellphone, could be recorded there.

When I was a teenager I put apart my old dial telephone and attached RCA Jacks for sound in and out to the front. It worked great :)

Is it?
I read that as of some month this year the cell phone number list was "opened" or something for telemarketers to call across the U.S.

They even set up a new Do Not Call list

That comes up all the time. It's just a rumor, always is - I read somewhere that a cell company (think it was Verizon) said they would never release that kind of information without their customer's consent.

I doubt there's an official DNC list (made and/or mandated by the FCC) for cells. As far as I know it's still illegal.

Nope, still illegal to telemarket to any callee-pays number.

That certainly makes sense.

We don't pay for incomming calls, but we also don't have a telemarketing problem THAT bad (yet, it's getting there)

I'm using a slightly modded earphone ... remove the actual earplug, and feed the signal directly into my soundcard, with a small capacitor in series for DC decoupling and a variable resistor to get the right level.

One thing I should mention is that I do have a prior business relationship with this dealership. I didn't buy my car from them, but I did take my car in for service when Saturn of Devon ceased to be. So I don't think I can get them for any legal issues, but I have no problem with telling them off in person.

Funny thing is, they used to send me snail mail reminding me to bring my car in for service, and I had no problems with that.

The TCPA of 1991 made solicitation calls to cell phones illegal and nothing has changed since. However, if you in any way gave permission for the business to have the number, you opened it up in a way; for example, leaving that number at a service call as your sole contact number (and not specifying it as a cell).

Most enforcement actions go against the large operators of call centres, required by law to do periodic database scrubs, not against a local business who may have one or 2 cell numbers by accident.

I figured as much. Oh well. Thanks for the info on the TCPA, BTW.

I don't know you, but I found this thread by searching Google for a way to capture voicemail to an mp3. I recently lost my father and was able to download saved voicemails from my phone that contained his voice. Thank you so much.

www.gotvoice.com

download their software, install on your PC
it will walk you through handling everything else. it will then email you an mp3 of the voicemail(s) that you are trying to save. hope this helps.
