I just saw this on CNN:
Conservatives ask FBI to investigate hotel porn

NEW YORK (AP) -- Pornographic movies now seem nearly as pervasive in America's hotel rooms as tiny shampoo bottles, and the lodging industry shows little concern as conservative activists rev up a protest campaign aimed at triggering a federal crackdown.

A coalition of 13 conservative groups -- including the Family Research Council and Concerned Women for America -- took out full-page ads in some editions of USA Today earlier this month urging the Justice Department and FBI to investigate whether some of the pay-per-view movies widely available in hotels violate federal and state obscenity laws.

The coalition also is trying to draw attention to CleanHotels.com, a directory of hotels and motels nationwide that pledge to exclude adult offerings from their in-room entertainment service.

Though porn is now cheaply and readily accessible on the Internet, and through many other outlets, the activists chose to target the hotel industry in part because of the well-known brands of corporations that cater to family vacationers as well as business travelers.

"These are places that you take your family -- these are respectable institutions," said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council. "Anything that brings porn into the mainstream is a concern. It just desensitizes people."

I think what they really mean to say is that by getting hotels to stop selling TV-based pornography, they are going to boost online sales of pornography when people surf to it on their laptops over their hotel-provided wireless Internet connections. Try stopping that!

Heck, if these people manage to get hotels to stop selling porn on TVs, I could just see those same hotels turning around becoming affiliates for someone of the larger online porn sites instead. That would be fun!

Oh, just some background on the Family Research Council, these are the same people who have publicly called for the extermination of homosexuals. The FRC, specifically their president, the same Tony Perkins quoted above, also has a business relationship with the Ku Klux Klan. So feel free to draw your own conclusions about the FRC.

These people are powernuts. I have to note that I don't think there's a hotel around where you can't go to the front desk and say, "I have kids. Disable the pay-per-view in the room please." You don't even have to mention porn -- they'll just turn it all off.

I still can't figure out if these people go after these things because of some unquestionable religious beliefs they have, or if there is some sort of more nefarious ulterior motive. I mean, they don't see this stuff, they're not exposed to it, but just knowing that it exists crawls under their skin.

Yeah, the article made mention of that too. Hotels will gladly disable the porn if requested.

Beating the devil = eternal reward
Not proactively beating the devil = limbo or eternal damnation

Supposedly.

As a member of the hotel industry, I can tell you that most major chains have been phasing out porn from their TV systems cause of a huge drop in demand and a huge rise in costs.

I see that the FRC sees this, demands change and when its phased out for purely business reasons, they'll claim victory.

I was reading in one of the major hotel trade mags about the internet and hotels. High speed internet feeds in hotel rooms are now rated as the most important feature. Many business travelers would rather have internet in the rooms than phones or TVs. And "Personal Entertain" was mentioned often as on of the reasons to this desire for good internet.

Your lonely business traveler is going to hit the net for their porn needs. They can feed their own kinks, and their is no paper trail to have to explain to accounting.

The nature of internet feeds in hotel is changing, which will make things much nicer for con-goers and throwers. I like Westin model (which will probably soon be Marriott's model). Free, mid-speed wireless everywhere in the hotel (sleeping rooms, lobbies, function spaces). Then a graduated scale of higher speed wired connections available at variable higher pricing.

Oh well. In a way, I hoped there was some nefarious ulterior motive. Then it might actually be based on something sensible, and then there might be possibility for eventual compromise. Kinda hard to compromise when you're up against perceived ultimate evil, though.

Yeah I don't really get what these people are afraid of. People can get porn one way or another, and if they do, what difference does it make to these people?

Because they get off on preaching their morality to others and telling them what to do.

Of course, not all religious people are like this. The silent majority of them keep their religion to themselves and are generally well behaved. It's the loud mouthed extremeists who are making the rest of the group look bad.
