Stuff I've been up to
Sep. 10th, 2003 10:46 pmWell, it's been a busy couple of weeks for me. I've been at work (voluntarily) fro the last 3 or 4 Saturdays, working away on an old project, a multi-threaded mailer in Python. (and besides, I could use the extra pay!) Interestingly enough, I found that not setting a mutex before updating a certain variable won't just cause data corruption, but it can also cause the entire thread to stop running. No exception is raised, but the thread no longer does anything or consumes process time. My best guess is that there is a blocking condition going on in that thread where it thinks it has to wait for that variable to be updated.
Multi-threaded programming makes my brain hurt sometimes.
I've started physical therapy for my foot again. As I've mentioned before, the current theory is that I have capsulitis in the joints at the base of my 5 toes. This in turn is irritating some of the nerves, and causing my nerve troubles. I was at my second session tonight, and they had me stand on a slant board to stretch my ankles. It was *amazing* at how stiff my left achiles tendon was! Their theory is that the reason my foot is not healing is because there is scar tissue built up around the nerve. So they will be treating me with some deep tissue massage which amounts to them rubbing the sole of my foot REALLY hard to break up some of that scar tissue. It will be a bit painful, I am told. Fun.
I implemented Bugzilla awhile ago to try it out and, ugh. It needs some serious interface work, especially on the search screen. It was also very CPU intensive, which I found surprising since it uses a database (as opposed to flat files). Of course, the entire thing is written as Perl CGIs, though. *sigh* (Maybe I should write a rant about why I hate CGIs sometime...)
I bought a cute tiger plushie sometime last week. It has really nice fur. Simple things for my simple mind. :-)
I haven't done too much else. Since Sundays have been my only day off, I've been spending them at the gym, doing chores like laundry, and playing lots of Metal Gear Solid 2!
Speaking of the gym, I seem to have lost about half an inch of my waist, probably from spending 30 minutes on the exercise bike 3-4 times a week. I noticed this because I can now tighten my belt another notch. My weight seems to have peaked at around 192 pounds (I was 155 before I joined the gym last September!), so now I can concentrate on losing some fat.
That's about it.

Date: 2003-09-11 07:33 am (UTC)There's a cute fox plush at Toys R Us for $35 (CDN) and it has a smaller fox plush attached to it. THat's a really good price, considering most plushies that size are around $35-40 by themselves.
He was so big and soft too.

Doing some quick math...
Date: 2003-09-11 09:47 am (UTC)You're trying to say you've put on 35 pounds of muscle in the 12 months you've been going to the gym? I know a few bodybuilders who are going to be pretty jealous of you.
I know I'd be going nuts if I could pack on muscle like that... but then again, if I was packing on muscle like that, I wouldn't even look like a cheetah anymore, and that's not my goal. It's hard enough trying to bring my body fat down under 20% and keep it stably underneath that. Hour-long sessions of DDR and other aerobic workouts combined with moderate eating are doing the trick, though, and the lean muscle is coming with it, so I can't argue too much.
You leopards are all about the bulk, anyways. :)

Date: 2003-09-11 10:28 am (UTC)That's about right. :-) The downside to this is that I didn't lose any fat, so I went up 1 shirt size and 2 pants sizes. My weight also seems to have reached a plateau. I haven't gained any more lately.

It makes it all the easier to pin my chewtoys down with. :-)

Date: 2003-09-11 12:38 pm (UTC)Since then you say you put on some padding, and then build up 35lb of muscle under that...
Factoring in that I don't much care for the super-lean-muscled "anatomy model" look, but I'm very fond of the beefy-but-still-sorta-soft "football player" look...
*does some police-style image editing in his head*
Jeebus Christmas! You're hot! Murr. :)

PS - I was supposed to get a call from you, regarding Feral!, either yesterday or this Saturday... didn't hear from you yesterday, so try me on Saturday, either before noon or after supper. E-mail ddesveaux@sympatico.ca for the phone number or other details, or to make alternate arrangements if you need them.
