What a stressful week I've had. Here's a list of crazy stuff that went on:

- On Tuesday, a routine software deployment and schema update turned into a nightmare as MySQL went nuts. We did an UPDATE while the database was running, on a fairly large table, and MySQL didn't seem to like it. All sessions that accessed that table went into an infinite loop, quickly raised the load to above 200. That resulted in some downtime until I was able to isolate the problem. Of course, the CHECK TABLE and REPAIR TABLE commands showed that *nothing* was wrong with the table in question.

- Had some implementation issues with trying to get a new machine up and running, thanks to our ISP. It mainly revolved around DNS stuff. The morons update their DNS records *once a day*. I wish I could say I was joking, but it was for real.

- There were some new bugs introduced in my CRM system bug the bugfix for the database problem which in turn caused a work stoppage. Had to fix those rather quickly. Ugh.

- When the new machine finally came up, had to deal with some issues with legacy Perl code that was not very portable. (Use $ENV{"HOME"}, people, not the frickin' full pathname!)

- After deploying code to the new machine, had issues with name of the Perl interpreter. The old machine had /usr/bin/perl, which was an ancient version of Perl, and /usr/bin/perl5, which was a newer version. The new machine had just /usr/bin/perl, which was a newer version. Unfortunately, I had a NASTY time trying to implement conditionals in a makefile, so I ended up having to spend 2 hours rewriting the build script in Perl.

- Head a deadline for an unrelated project that loomed over my head throughout the week. I /finally/ got it finished right before I headed out the door today.

- Had to spend time investigating other DNS providers, like UltraDNS!

- I spent all of today in meetings and working on specs. Didn't get to write a single line of code or even play with CVS or BIND. :-\

- Did I mention that our Internet connection went down for 45 minutes today? Router trouble in ATX's network.

- Oh, yeah, I'm heading into the office again tomorrow. I live for working on Saturday's.

Finally, there's one cool thing that happened today. This LiveJournal entry:
