Exciting few days
Aug. 4th, 2002 10:31 pmI had an exciting last few days...
Wednesday
I came into work to be greeted with, "the Internet is down". Seemed that the T1 coming into our building was down. Talked to the landlord, and it turned out that the T1 providing his voice lines was also down, which suggested a problem with the fiber optic cable going into the building. Verizon's techs came over, pretended to do something useful, then told us, "uh, it looks like the problem is in the fiber". Duh. Some more phonecalls were made, and Verizon and ATX finally started looking at the fiber. By the end of the day, the cause was found: someone at the CO bumped the connector on the cable when doing maintenance the night before. Twits.
Interestingly enough, the T1 and phonelines at our new location were finally set up that day, so we decided to start moving equipment and servers up there. That kept me there until 11 that night, and other folks there until much later.
Thursday
We spent most of this day moving all of the office equipment in wonderful Philadelphia summer weather. Hot, sweaty work. I got outta there at 6:45, thanks to my physical therapy appointment, but other folks didn't make it out of there until 4 or 5 in the morning. Not surprsingly...
Friday
I came into work this morning at the new location to a VERY quiet office, as only one other person made it in. In addition to being quiet, there were plenty of empty pizza boxes, bottles of soda, and a few cans of beer scattered around. Almost made me wish I had stayed the night before. Not!
I spent a good chunk of the day moving my desks and computers into my area of the office (the nice, dark corner...), and getting accustomed to some new issues with the network. Tried to get some work done, but one of our servers decided to have issues, and spent half an hour on the phone with a clueful person at the colo center. And whaddya know, it was time for me to leave!
Later that evening,
phildafeline came by to visit. Just as we were ready to pass out, there was this horrible noise which can be best described as, BLAAAAAAAAAARRRRGGGGG!! that started coming from the hallway. Seems that the fire alarm system in my apartment building decided to go off. We stood outside for about 20 minutes until the Fire Department came by, found no traces of a fire, and left. The alarm was still going, though. So Phil and I walked around town for a bit, since the weather had cooled down for a bit, came back to my place later, saw that the alarm was off, and went to bed.
Saturday
Not much happened today. Phil and I went to visit Kagemushi, and the 3 of us went to see Austin Powers 3. I thought it would be a cheesy sequel, but it actually turned out pretty good. Worth my money.
Later, we headed up north to visit Bennie. We had a little getogether at his place and proceeded to burn old/unused Anthrocon registration forms. Heh huh huh, FIRE!!
Sunday
I guess I should mention how my foot has been. I've seen more improvement and I'm off the cane now. Still limping a bit, but not nearly as bad as before I went on the cane 2 months ago. In fact, I'm even able to wear my running shoes again. And there was much rejoicing. So, I decided to clean out my car for the first time since uh, last summer. Also went through some old folders of mine, and found plenty of old receipts. Did some laundry, talked to one of my parental units on the phone, and got some things taken care of for Feral.
As I write this, I've felt better than I have in a couple of months. My foot is better, I'm caught up on my paperwork, and I've got some personal issues of mine under control. In short, other than things that are currently beyond my control, things are going good overall for me for the first time in months. And that is good. :-)
