I spent most of yesterday playing around with djbdns, getting it installed both on my personal computer and one of my servers. Once I set it to do cache forwarding, the speed increase in name lookups on my home machine (on dialup) was quite noticable and impressive. I am really starting to like his suite of programs, including daemontools. I also enjoy reading his articles about UNIX.

Anyway, I also watched a few movies over the weekend:

Underworld
About: Vampires killing werewolves. Until a vampire falls in love with a werewolf.
Review: This movie was complex on several levels. The plot was fairly original, and the story was set in the present time, which made for some interesting technological issues coming into play. The heroine is also a vampire, and you start sympathising with her as the movie progresses. The vampires aren't totally evil, and the werewolves aren't totally good. Everyone is shades of gray. Just like real life, now that I think of it. If I could change one thing, I would have less action. I think it spoiled the movie in some ways.
Grade: B+

Devil's Advocate:
About: Lawyers really ARE evil!
Review: Keanu Reeves plays one Kevin Lomax, a lawyer who has never lost a case. He gets an offer he can't refuse from John Milton (Al Pachino), who is the head of a prestigous lawfirm. As the movie progesses, Kevin has issues with his conscience, and the sins of vanity and materialism are explored. This film was a bit heavy on the gore and the sex. If it had less of that, it would be a more solid movie.
Grade: B

In other news, a weird DNS issue had made my website inaccessable for the timebeing. It appears that my web provider's DNS server thinks it's still authoritative, when it's really not. :-) I sent a message to the provider, hopefully it'll get fixed soon.

I think you are making words up.

"djbdns" I mean, come on! At least give us a vowel. =D

I agree with you on Devil's Advocate, it was a pretty neat movie, but Pacino wasn't really convincing as the Devil. Just as Al Pacino. The gore didn't bother me, tho. Underworld is still way down my NetFlix list.

LESS action? The terrible action scenes are the only thing that kept me from slipping into a coma during this movie. Underworld is a long, very boring movie. The characters are leaden and stupid to a fault. You see every plot twist coming at least an hour before it's revealed, and then when it happens, you wonder how stupid these vampires must be not to have realized it 400 years ago...

Ungh. My Grade: F.

I agree with you on Underworld. It gets a B in my book, and they did put a lot of effort into the action scenes (I watched the "making-of" stuff on BET before it was released). Unfortunately, it does suffer from predictability, as someone else pointed out in another comment. I enjoyed the "just like real life" feeling of it, and nothing beats Viktor's bloody-IV entrance :-)

Hey man, you study humans, I study computers. Don't even get me STARTED on the lineage of UNIX and BSD. :-)

There's a character named "Rigel" in Underworld. :-)

As for Al Pachino, I actually think he did a great job as the devil. I don't think his job was to be some scary person. His job was to be smooth, seductive, and charismatic. To make you want to join the Dark Side, as it were. That's my thoughts on it, anyway.
