I've been a busy cat! Here's a random list of stuff I did last week and weekend:
  • I found Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on DVD over the weekend and picked it up. It's been several years since I saw that movie and I forgot how adult it was. Like Raphael's temper, wow!

  • I also saw Comic Book: The Movie. This was a hilarious movie made by none other than Mark Hammil. He went to San Diego Comic Con playing a teacher who was pretending to do a "documentry" about a comic book character from the 1950s. And the other folks in it were his voice-acting buddies. Very very funny.

  • I got to play with Anthrocon's new cash register for the Con Store. This one sucks less than the one we had last year, and also has a barcode reader! A little research later and I found out that we can use EAN-8 (8-digit) barcodes that start with the numbers "20", which are designated for internal use. (Kinda like the 192.168/16 and 10/8 non-routable networks in IP)

Anyway, that means we'll be able to put barcodes on whatever we sell this year and process people that much quicker.

  • Back to movies again, I also saw Van Helsing. It was a pretty good vampire movie, with some werewolf action, too. Of course, there were plot holes big enough to drive a truck through, but the action made me forget about that. :-)

  • Monday morning at work was fun. I set up my laptop... and forgot to plug it in. Since I didn't have the battery applet in GNOME's menu, I didn't realize my battery was about to run out... until my machine suddenly shut down. I felt like such a dork when I realized that I didn't plug the machine in, and now I have the battery meter on the taskbar.

  • On Thursday night, the weather was really nice, so I decided to take a walk around. On the way back to my place, I stopped in at the Rite-Aid to pick up some protein bars. When I was at the cash register, I was astonished to see the clerk answer a cellphone. I was even more surprised when he said, "Hi, I'm the guy who found this lost cellphone". Turned out that someone had forgotten it at the store, and it was them who had called.

  • Oh, and about the protein bars... I was having a chat with [livejournal.com profile] unclekage the other day about healthy eating, and he strongly recommended to me that I cut some of the gratuitous sugar out of my diet. When I asked what I should eat when I get hungry in the afternoons, he suggested that I try eating protein bars instead since it will digest slower.

I dis some research on my own and I learned that sugar (simple carbs) metabolises into insulin VERY quickly, much quicker than complex carbs (whole wheats, etc.) and proteins. What this means is that if you eat sugar, the glucose level gets raised, and the body stops burning fat, which is bad. Also, when the "sugar rush" goes away, your glucose drops, which puts you on a bit of a roller coaster with regards to insulin levels, and that's not so good, either.

I'll weigh myself again in a few weeks and see how I'm doing, I think.

  • I also found Animemusicvideos.org the other day and have been downloading some of the ones based on Cowboy Bebop and Naruto. Very good stuff. (And I'll be passing copies out at some furmeets, I think)

That's all for now, seeyas!

>Protein is one of the slowest, if not _the_ slowest, thing your body
>burns for fuel. That's one of the reasons your body turns on the muscle
>before it does fat when it's turns on famine mode

Ooh, that's an important point that I forgot to mention... if you cut down on what you eat, it's essential that you keep up your weight training to keep your body from devouring the muscles. I gotta remember that. :-)

Unless you have stuff that isn't available online, I think I'm okay. We have a nice fast T1 at this office. :-)
