God vs. Bush
Sep. 21st, 2004 01:44 pmWhile I'm in a relgious mood, here's something else to think about with regards to the upcoming election...

[Update:
kipaji pointed out that the graphic was inaccurate compared to the actual hurricane tracks. Apparently whoever made it decided to stretch the truth a little. I am not amused.]

Date: 2004-09-21 06:24 pm (UTC)Just FYI.
1. People were turned away at the polls. People who lived in black neighborhoods were turned away at the polls last election season. I personally, was turned away. Friends of mine were. We saw it with our own eyes. And then somehow there was a gigantic scandal about it. You put the pieces together.
2. Hurricanes are terrifying. Aside from, oh, the long hours your abode has to withstand 130+ MPH winds with TREES and shit flying everywhere, theres also the aftermath. The devistation they can cause is great. After Andrew, our family was left 3 weeks without water, and 1.5 MONTHS without electricity. My father, who depended on air conditioning and air purifiers for his faulty, cancer-ridden lungs, walked around with a fucking oxygen mask/tank for that 1.5 months. This too, I experienced with my own eyes.
3. Putting blame on something for someone getting voted into the presidency causes individuals to not want to vote. True story. I'm fairly sure half the country was responsible for voting Bush in (not just the fuckups made in FL), and I'm also sure that "god" doesn't send folk natural disasters because of what goes on in American politics. Of course, I understand that the natural, American way of thinking suggests that god keeps an eye on our country and our going-on's because America is the bestest country in the whole wide world, (filled with gewd wittle chwistian soldiers) and worth god's every glance, but uh...no.
So, not to sound like an "oversensative faggot", but could we knock it off with the "LOL 3 hurricanes in a row is God's retribution for those Florida people voting in Bush LOL"? Please? Please. It really cheeses me off. I have a hell of a lot more family and friends in Florida than I do in the rest of the world combined. Please, stop it.
Karn, I'm not targetting you specifically. Believe me. Everyone is posting shit like this tonight. :\ Admittedly, I'm using your entry as an example, however you made mention that you didn't make it up, and are merely reposting it from somewhere else.
Can see all the comments and the rest of the entry here if you like: http://www.livejournal.com/users/mindslide/114694.html?nc=19

Date: 2004-09-21 06:47 pm (UTC)1) Holy CRAP. As others in your LJ said, that's horrible! PA is expected to be a Battleground state this year. I think I'll bring along my digital camera/video recorder with me when I go to vote...
2) 1.5 months without electricity? Wow, that's rough. I've never been through anything more severe than a tropical storm, so I had no idea things can be that bad.
3) That's a good point, and I hadn't thought about that.

Date: 2004-09-21 10:18 pm (UTC)Oh, I know. I know it's just humor. I know everyone else will find it funny, I'm just saying I'm one person who doesn't. No hard feelings on you as a -person- or anything, I just wanted to represent. Most people who are politically active in FL/ from FL feel as I do.

Well, that's not very cool of whoever made it.
I've updated the LJ entry to reflect what you just mentioned.

Date: 2004-09-21 08:10 pm (UTC)actually, what I wonder about, coming from quite a storm-ridden area myself (we even have the occasional tornado in the summer):
WHY DO PEOPLE STILL F*ING LIVE THERE WHEN THEIR HOUSES GET BLOWN AWAY THRICE A YEAR? O.o
Can anybody help me? Why don't they declare Florida a national reservation and move everyone to California so they can get killed by quakes instead of drowning to death? It just strikes me as really odd and I fail to get that into my head.

Date: 2004-09-21 10:32 pm (UTC)Why do people live in NYC when another plane can fly through another tall building?
Why live in California when you could be swallowed up by the earth at any time?
Why live in the Midwest if tornados ride through (which are moreso unpredictable than hurricanes or even earthquakes)?
Why take your kids trick-or-treating when someone can slip razorblades in their candy?
Of course, some of the above examples arn't natural disasters, but they all share the same answer: We're all going to die, so why fear ANY specific cause of death?
This "3 hurricanes" thing is...very odd. It doesn't happen that often every year (most years, FL is missed), and certaintly not thrice a year.

Date: 2004-09-22 02:37 am (UTC)It's just as offensive when you use a natural disaster to try and score political points.

Date: 2004-09-22 06:04 am (UTC)Pat Robertson made explicit prayers calling on God to "call home" some supreme court justices some time back. That he still has a large congregation of bleating sheep after THAT little incident completely disgusts me and is a heinous black mark on ALL Baptists. Nobody screamed "bloody murder', but they SHOULD HAVE. Ick.
Florida was a pivotal state in the last election, and the voting shenanigans helped tipped the scale towards the current presidency - ouch. How ugly and convenient that voting irregularities would occur in the state that is controlled by another Bush.
I am utterly exhausted by Bush supporters sticking their heads in the sand every time a major item is brought up, and then pulling their heads out to squawk indignantly at getting some of what Republicka has been dishing out via the Swift Boat ads or anti-humanity policies from the current administration ... Republicka dished it out, let them eat soem of it, too.

Date: 2004-09-22 09:43 pm (UTC)> ballot
Yep. I can't speak for the Democratic Party, but I personally want Nader off the ballot because he has never held public office (http://people.howstuffworks.com/election-issue9.htm). I think it's incredibly arrogant (and a waste of everyone's time) of him to have never held a public office yet to think that he's somehow qualified to run the country. I want Nader running the country even less than I want to see Bush running the country!
Kerry's military service? Right here. (http://www.johnkerry.com/about/john_kerry/military_records.html) I don't know the details about Cambodia in 1968, but I do know that Kerry has been far more up front about his military career than Bush has been. All I've heard from Bush has been vague statements like, "I'm proud of my service", with nothing more specific. That gives me cause to think that Bush is hiding something, and it doesn't sit well with me.
Great points.
Date: 2004-09-22 09:58 pm (UTC)Nader has no experience. Kerry's record is public - and *available without a court order*. Mr. Bush's record is incomplete, and what is available has gaps.
Those are unarguable points of fact - and yet, there are still arguments.
