DSL Outage shuts down Internet for thousands Thanks for the link, [livejournal.com profile] music4fun.

Summary: Verizon screwed up a software upgrade (or something) that disrupted service for thousands of DSL customers across the region for up to 24 hours. Home users were affected, as were businesses and at least one non-profit.

What can be learned from this article: 1) Do not run public webservers at home on your DSL connection. Get cheap webhosting instead. 2) Find an ISP that doesn't suck that you can also have a backup dialup account for when your DSL flakes out. 3) Internet service is far from the "5 9s" of reliability that you have for phone service. Plan accordingly.

Verizon began blocking ranges of IP addresses belonging to British and European ISPs on Dec. 22, according to the company. The blacklisting of e-mail from abroad was in response to spam coming from the region, according to a customer service representative at Verizon who identified himself only as "Gary." He said company policy prevents him from giving out his last name.

This, by the way, is severely flooding me with bounces, as we have a few guests at Eurofurence with verizon-based e-mail addresses who won't get their system notices now. Hooray for dickhead "admins"!

How is it that you are getting hit with bounces, if I may ask?

Because the registration robot uses a From: address that is forwarded to my inbox, so if the MTA generates a bounce, I get the message.

Oh, well at least they are bouncing the messages in a sensable manner at the SMTP level. (I thought they were bouncing messages already received, which is way incorrect behavour.)
