And worst of all, there was no obvious way to "opt-out" of any of the spams that I've gotten. Twits.

I think I'll be turning off that address in a few days.

Probably nothing they don't already have. I know that BrightMail has been seeding the web and Usenet with spamtrap addresses for years.

lot of those look very familiar. Don't feel left out I got many those too. I just still wish they were edible (but tasted better than the product of said name). OK, yeah, I am like over tired and being weird. I'll go take a nap.

At least they're honest about it..

In their "Privacy Policy" section:

Right to Sell/License Data: CRC may sell and/or license the personal information that you provide to us to third party businesses. These businesses may include providers of direct marketing services and applications, including lookup and reference, data enhancement, suppression and validation, email marketing, and telemarketing.

Figures. Ain't no such thing as a free lunch, afterall. Were you, by some miracle, actually able to get free goodies through them?

Ah, I'm glad you saw it too. I don't think it makes them any less twits, though. How many consumers are actually going to read that?

As for their goodies, here's how it works. You buy certain services through their affiliate links. After you've bought a certain amount, they claim to send you a $1K Gift Card for Target or wherever. I Googled and what people claim is that the rules keep changing so that you never get your gift card, and they make off with the commissions from the affiliate sales.

So you never actually get to go secret shopping like they claim on their website?

I google search their website and came up with your post.

Not that I can see. It seems to be all about buying various services through affiliate accounts, where they are the affiliate. Do that enough times and they'll give you a $1K Gift Card. Of course, they keep changing the rules so you never do meet the criteria for their $1K gift card. Classic bait and switch.

Dell does it too.

Dell Finance tried to nail me with that BS when I got a new monitor. The pamphlet I got in the mail states they don't "sell" your info to just anybody, but reserve the right to "provide" your customer information to "non-affiliated third parties." Opting out is easy enough, you just call customer service and tell the person in India. I grilled that poor girl, and apparently they give you 30 days to opt out before they start selling your info.

And that would be why I give out DEAs to everybody, even Apple. If I start getting spam to that address, I'll just kill it.

I could have given a DEA to Dell Finance, but what's the point? They also have my SSN, home address, and phone numbers. With the exception of my SSN, the rest of that is fair game as well.

I wonder what's going to happen to the dea.spamcon.org addresses after that august organization finally packs it in, or simply forgets to renew their domain name.

I asked my contact at their DEA supplier (ClicVU), and he pointed out that there's really nothing he could do if the spamcon.org domain died. :-/
