Spam encouraged by email retards

Security Don’t ignore it and it won’t go away

By Guy Matthews: Thursday 14 July 2005, 10:54

HONESTLY, you’d think people would know better. Research published by security vendor Mirapoint indicates that 11 per cent of email users have bought products and services from spam emails, while nine per cent have lost money to an email scam.

The research, carried out by research company the Radicati Group, reveals that, even if they aren't buying products, 39 per cent of users admit to clicking on embedded links within spam. The fools.

"If the promotion in the spam sounds too good to be true, it probably is," said Marcel Nienhuis, market analyst at the Radicati Group, something you’d think would be obvious to all. "User education and implementation of smart practices when dealing with spam, such as not opening unidentified messages, will be crucial in discouraging spammers. If people stop buying products from spam, spam would probably go away."

The basic gist of the article is that spam remains profitable because some dumbasses people actually buy stuff that's advertised in spam. And even more people click on links that are in spam.

Seriously, what is so hard for the end users to grasp? Why do people click on links in emails that they receive from total strangers?? *bangs head on desk*

Everyone loves something for nothing.

An undeducated guess would be that is human nature. Things like curiosity or impulses to open email becouse the offer a chance to be real...

Also I would like to guess that a lot of the spam is opened by very basic users (read email and light web browsing) that have a lot of time to spare. specially in the lower income band.

Probably the same userss that send chainmail with jokes and retarded information like ... resend this 10 times and an angel will visit you... resend this 20 times and the angel will paw you off while sleeping.... resend this 50 times and the angel will come in anthro form and hug you with soft pawss...

People is just stupid, and spamers are geting smarter at the double of speed that people do.

I'm really surprised this paper hasn't gotten hammered for using the word "retards."

In regards to the scam 9% well all I can say is the people running those make it their life to scam people. Some are good at it. I have a friend that got nailed by one of these and it looked pretty legit. After the fact i checked and found that the databases that the country the guy is from is notoriously easy to hack and change, the guy spent the money to put a list of AUTHENTIC lawyers at the top of google search , and a few other dirty tricks that made the scam real enough to dupe my friend.
