I got this rather strange email the other day. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what the questions are, and how to go about answering them...

I would be grateful if I could get information from you about two issues:

1 - Are there any ways for the site owner not to be aggrieved because of the spammers who sent emails of the links of the website from outlook or this kind of programs to get the website closed?

2 - We do not send spam mails. Does the related firm need a minimum number of complaints or proofs to take the complaints into consideration in the condition that some people, with a good or bad purpose, sent the links of our website to other people or made advertisements at forums? Or else, are the complaints taken into consideration and the procedure is done even there is a few number of complaints?

Now to be fair, the person who wrote was from Turkey, so I can be forgiving if his English skills are sub-par. I just... don't know how to answer him. :-P

Best I can figure is that someone is sending spam messages that appear to be coming from their website and they want to know:

1.) How they can make it clear that it's not from them so people won't get upset and keep trying to get them shut down?
2.) What sort of evidence do they need in order to get the people who actually ARE sending the spam shut down?

He should be told that his website server has becomea spam zombie. Someone has more or less planted a program on it in some way which is taking any email address it can get and sending unwanted spam to those locations. I'd also suggest sweeping for that bugger then killing it and getting a better firewall or stricter permissions. o_O

Let me explain.

Our company mail server happens to be xx.xx.xx.89/28

Then a spammer sends a batch of spam mail xx.xx.xx.10/28

Then some idiot somewhere in those "black list authorities" decides to nail that spammer by blocking xx.xx.xx.10/24.

You think I'm enraged? You bet.

how does blocking xx.xx.xx.10/24 affect xx.xx.xx.89/28 ?

If the xx's from the first and second IP match up, blocking a /24 will block all addresses from xx.xx.xx.0 to xx.xx.xx.255.

1. Is there any way to prevent people from spamming folks and claiming to be us?

2. We didn't do it. Are we gonna get in trouble for this or can we stop it in time?

I agree with Vesuvius. I'm not sure who the "related firm" is, though. That'd be my question to him. It sounds like he expects someone to sue him or shut him down, so he wants to know what the criteria are for the plaintiff's determination of whether to press charges.

This doesn't make much sense unless the "related firm" is the company he's messaging. You can't possibly know what someone else's business practices might be.

I'd say it all depends on the laws in his country. Can spammers be prosecuted there?
