Though to be honest, according to my Economy teacher the boom in the Clinton era wasn't (entirely) his doing. Because the oil market is inflexible (the supply won't mean the demand, ergo the price will drop or rise dramatically depending on demand) the boom can largely be attributed to the first Gulf War and the whole Food For Oil fiasco. As long as Saddam was pumping extra oil the world (and more importantly, the US) oil price was down -> cost of everything went down -> economy sped up. Unfortunately for Bush #1 the end of his term happened before the boom. Cue Bush #2. Basically the same plan as his dad, get more oil from Iraq to help the economy in recession. Unfortunately, because he tried to do it by cutting corners the end result is that there's actually far less oil being pumped than there was even in Saddam's time before he went down, resulting in the current sky-high prices.
Explains the attack on Iraq nicely. Certainly more logical than the "erm, erm, we tried to... help them? They buried their WDMs? It's not our fault, this is no time to point fingers!" excuses thrown about amid sneers at the mere idea that oil could ever (never!) be the reason.
Economy. Teacher. What do you think the discussion focussed on?
> ...we certainly haven't seen any of that mythical oil you keep claiming we invaded for.
Yes, because the US don't have enough troops there to secure the oil pipelines. And I won't go into your star-eyed image of the world right now thanks, my suspense of disbelief only goes so far.
