Eminent Domain

Sung to the tune of "Yellow Submarine"

Heretofore I owned my store,
And my friend, the one next door.
Then they came, them pirates be,
To take it all away from me.

(Refrain)
We all live under Eminent Domain,
Eminent Domain, Eminent domain.
We all live under Eminent Domain,
Eminent Domain, Eminent domain.

It's the blight they say I have,
I' been here since my granddad.
It's not yours anymore,
Taken by money's whore.

(Refrain)

But it's old, it's history,
Protected for posterity.
Not no more, now it's for me,
See I got an RFP.

(Refrain)

Funny you should mention that, actually.

When Kage was up on stage asking for donations, he was saying things like, "Money is the root of all evil! If you have any of that EVIL money on you, we will GLADLY take it off your hands!"

For the record, eminent domain is a good thing: Without it we'd have no highways, sewers or power lines. The problem is the recent trend of using it to seize property for use by private entities, such as is happening in Ardmore.

It's more than that. It's the complete baldfaced lies they try to get people to believe in order to justify seizing property for their own gains. The quickest way to piss me off is to insult my intellect.

"Allowing me to build my private building here and making millions of dollars will be GOOD for the community, because I'll be paying taxes on that money."

"The buildings I am going to demolish are blighted." (and by "blighted" he means "more than 30 years old.")

"We'll give you some new land to build on, that will be yours as long as the wind blows, the grass grows, and the sky is blue!"

You know, it just occurred to me... what's to stop the developer's land from getting seized back by the township one day when something bigger and better comes along? Wouldn't that be ironic!

Ah, yes, "blight". We've been through this before in San Francisco. Here, this paper may help your arguments in Ardmore.

See also the arguments (especially by "seand") here with its references to SF's Fillmore district.
And here's a link to the PBS special about it.
