My cellphone rings at 10:30 AM this morning. It's the Apple Store calling to let me know that my iMac is repaired.
38 hours after I brought it in. Now that's some good turnaround time! I can only conclude that cheetahs had something to do with this.
It turned out to be the power supply that was bad. About $100 for that and $150 for "level 2 labor" is $250. With AppleCare, I owed $0, and since AppleCare cost me $150 when I got this machine, I'm $100 ahead.
I came home, plugged in the machine, and it just started working again. The data on my hard drive was untouched.
In related news, I discovered that my Apple Keyboard and Macally two-button mouse worked well on my Powerbook. I think I'll be buying another set of each real soon.
