My cellphone rings at 10:30 AM this morning. It's the Apple Store calling to let me know that my iMac is repaired.
38 hours after I brought it in. Now that's some good turnaround time! I can only conclude that cheetahs had something to do with this.
It turned out to be the power supply that was bad. About $100 for that and $150 for "level 2 labor" is $250. With AppleCare, I owed $0, and since AppleCare cost me $150 when I got this machine, I'm $100 ahead.
I came home, plugged in the machine, and it just started working again. The data on my hard drive was untouched.
In related news, I discovered that my Apple Keyboard and Macally two-button mouse worked well on my Powerbook. I think I'll be buying another set of each real soon.

How many incidents now?

Re: How many incidents now?
Date: 2006-01-09 03:45 am (UTC)I'll summarize my Mac problems so far:
1) iMac had a bad power supply
2) The hard drive in my Powerbook died
Several months prior to #2, there was an odd problem where the drive kept going to sleep and not bothering to tell the OS, and I had to reset the Power Management Unit to put a stop to that.
It's kinda hard to tell with such a small sample size, really. What I can say for certainty is that every time there was an issue, Apple stepped in and took care of it. I wish I could say the same for other computer companies. (Case in point, a co-worker of mine had a drive die on his Dell laptop. He had to wait two weeks)

Date: 2006-01-09 04:31 am (UTC)I just recently got a Video Ipod for my spouse, and am now wondering if I should have opted for the extended warranty ;)
Re: How many incidents now?
Date: 2006-01-10 07:42 am (UTC)Most Repairs: ...iBook G3 (esp. in 2003, motherboard defects)
That would explain a lot: I had one of those, and it died THREE TIMES, taking three new motherboards, before they finally replaced it. With a much faster G4, fortunately. :)
