The above article has some links to picutres of people in fursuits.

From the 19th century.

That's ALL sorts of cool. Probably some of the earliest fursuits ever made, too.

English Pantomime Theatre has a strong tradition of 'fursuite' performer.. look at "Nana" from "Peter Pan" and such.

I love the old photos, fantastic costume work.

Actually, I think the early shamans that killed and skinned bears/wolves/whatever to wear them an possess their powers were the very first fursuiters ;)

Yeah, I tend to think it goes back thousands of years...

But I know what he means: This could be reasonably considered early *modern* fursuiting. In the same way, Scott McCloud showed that cartooning goes back thousands of years, but that the 19th-century Yellow Kid can be considered a pioneer in *modern* cartooning.

Yah, the second photo there is the original "Nana" costume from Peter Pan. Reference "Finding Neverland" for that one.

Well, really, look how many peoples in history have used animals as spirit guides, or gods. Pictures of Anubis from thousands of years ago. Natives dressing like wolves or birds.

Why do the British have to take credit for EVERYTHING? ^__^
