Fun Fact: KARR was voiced by Peter Cullen, who also did the voice of Optimus Prime.

Cullen also voiced Eeyore (since the 80s) and Murky Lurky. He's been a busy guy.

Why does KARR dodge off the cliff? What does that have to do with not being programmed to protect human life?

I asked that too, so I checked the Wikipedia entry. Turns out that KARR is programmed for self-preservation. It's what apparently made him so dangerous in the first place.

Yep. I remembered that episode without the consultation (yay, TV of our formative years): KARR was expensive to produce, and so self-preservation was his highest goal. The preservation of humans wasn't really part of his code, and even human orders were more of a suggestion he was open to rather than an obligation to obey.

KITT, on the other hand, was essentially a Three Law robot. His priorities were to preserve human life, obey the orders of authorized humans, and then protect himself. Plus, Michael knew his overrides, so that a human was nearly always in control.

What always got me was, why didn't KARR swerve the other way, toward that open field? Was it actually a hill or something?

Don't forget Directive 4! He's not allowed to run over either Devon or--er, wait. Nevermind. :-P

He didn't have to protect human life... but he was programmed to protect himself. Since KARR couldn't override his own programming (something Michael could do to KITT, as he demonstrated), KARR was forced to dodge, and thus inadvertantly destroy himself.

i dont think he can override KITT's programing, i think he simply disconnected kitt's control temporarly. because KITT is not the car, just the AI inside the knight 2000 car

ROFL! This is NOT a Pontiac:

I think he did swerve the other way and this is an unrelated car we see jumping off the cliff ;D

Boy did I used to love that series ^^
I still kinda want one of those Pontiacs, even though it would seem like all the ones that are left are in terrible conditions =P

Oh, and they actually sell KITT kits to convert your regular Firebird into a Kitt-alike car. Ketekh in TLKM was planning on getting one some years ago, don't know if he finally did.

I remember that episode. I'm sure Karr turns up a few times before that.. And who could forget Goliath with the indestructable truck.. Knightrider rules! (though if you actually watch it now you realise the majority of the episodes were utter pap and the gems were less common than you thought)
