Disturbing Office Converstaions
May. 8th, 2006 04:52 pmMe: I read an article in the Philly Metro today about a Chinese girl who was smuggled into the states and forced to work as a waitress for four--
Co-worker J: Cool!
Me: Um, why is that cool?
Co-worker J: Where else are you gonna get prostitutes from?
Me: o.O
Now, co-worker J is Chinese, so I know he's not being racist. I can only assume he was being serious. :-O

The belief that members of a group have a special right to make judgements (especially negative) on that group... that's been bothering me more and more lately. Sure, a Chinese person's *likely* to have a more in-depth perspective on Chinese people than a non-Chinese person will, but that's not an absolute. Plus, knowledge != intelligence or fairness.
Don't take it personally... yours is the majority opinion in America, I think.
