To sum up:
- A lawyer by the name of Marc Bragg thought he would be clever on Second Life's auctions. He messed with the URLs and bid on pieces of land that weren't yet publicly available. Since there was little competition, he got the land at substantially cheaper prices.
- Linden labs noticed this, and banned his account.
- Marc then filed suit against Linden Labs, demanding $8,000 in restitution.
What I have noticed about this case:
- $8,000 seems like a good number for a nuisance suit. That's right about what legal counsel would cost to fight it, which tempts the victim company to pay off the aggressor instead of spending about that much in lawyer fees.
- Marc's website is at http://www.chescolawyers.com/. Anyone wishing to leave him a comment telling him what they think of his attempts to get money out of Linden Labs can do so at http://www.chescolawyers.com/contactform.asp.
- "Marc Bragg" rhymes with "Douschebag". Conincidence? I think not!

No wait, that's not right. I'm not sure what I'm getting at. Maybe I've had too much sugar and too little sleep.

Date: 2006-05-18 06:22 pm (UTC)You either have to cope with assholes, or cope with being one.
It's in human nature to be a greedy asshole, and this lawyer happens to have planned his strategy pretty damn well, according to your observations. So he's really good at being an asshole, and for that you have to at least admire his skill.
All things considered, I'd have been more pleased if he went after a big faceless corporation rather than a start-up. This kind of thing discourages the innovation that lies at the heart of Linden Labs. On the bright side, nobody went to jail for a day because of some bitch officer with PMS.
