The way to tell the difference is to smell the poop. Poop with blood in it has a distinctive "bloody" smell to it.

At the time, I was not too particularly inclined to be sticking my head into the commode to sniff at my product. I was able to figure it out when I saw the red leaking out the same way it does when you mix the powder.

(I was studying for finals, and had been drinking LOTS of the stuff.)
