When I tried to open up my trunk tonight, I was unable to. The lights would blink but nothing else happened. I tried the button inside of the car and had the same result. Nothing I could do would get the trunk opened, and I had groceries in there!

Then I remembered the key on my keychain, and used it to unlock the trunk manually.

It's funny how when you get some neat new toy (keyless entry), you can become dependent on it, and forget to do things the old way.

I've had weird behavior like that on my Cougar from time to time. I chalk it up to shitty programmers.

its called a RFID tag, and anyone with a bit of smarts and some electronics knowlege can copy one...

I have a Device I build here which copies proxcards, it can read them from quite a fair distance too :P

It's RFID?
I thought it used the physical contact with the ignition lock...

Well if those automatic locks fail, it's good that some cars still carry a key as a backup option like mine does...but yes, I tend to forget the key is actually there myself, because I've never had to use it...

Mot all RFID products can be cloned so easily.

Java's "JavaCard" technology, for instance, can run on RFID chips, and it provides encryption and is impossible to clone unless you have the "Distributor" (or something like that) key; even the user key isn't enough.

Of course you could try a brute force attack, but RFID isn't particularly fast, and the keys are big =P

It's when you don't use encryption that you have a problem, such as what the US government was doing for the RFID IDs and passports, but I beleive they rectified that.
