You didn't look at the back of the calendar, did you? I mean, it's quite obvious from the pictures that this is one of the lion's human servants. I suspect he's massaging the lion's muzzle and happened to steal a kiss.
Current training methods depend on kindness and the animal is made VERY aware not only that it can harm a trainer, but that it can do so easilly.
Now, its not usually a challange that results in trainer injuries.. it's misunderstanding. Most often, the animal plays too hard.
I guess a challange can still occur, and you're right that theres no way to predict that. To be a trainer using kindness methods requires total trust for it to work.
