And I'm talking about OS/X Leopard, due out next Spring. Here are some pictures of their banners from the WWDC. (Originally seen at http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/07/apple-mac-pro-hands-on/ and http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/07/live-from-wwdc-2006-steve-jobs-keynote/)

One new feature of Leopard is "Time Machine", also known as "rsync with a graphical front end". It offers version control, the ability to "go back in time", and the ability to automatically store data offsite on a central server. It looks pretty cool, and I'm glad that there's finally going to be version control integrated with the OS.

"Spaces", also known as "virtual desktops" for those who have used X Windows is another UNIX tradition that I'm glad to see in OS/X.

Woo!

I have to admit I was actually pleasantly surprised at the features that will come in the OS Leopard X.

Vista is still playing catch-up to Cheetah, GUIly speaking, and I've been less than impressed at the new Vista features (that are slowly falling off the list as Redmond increasingly panics), the only thing they can present as new and 'innovative' are things that should have been fixed in Win 2000.

The greatest changes they're making are at kernel level, stuff users will never see, but it's simply necessary for the OS to even work properly. Again, stuff they should have fixed 6 years ago.

Is this version going to go back to the roots of MacOS (circa 7.1) where you don't need to be [livejournal.com profile] giza to keep it running? ;)

I am saddended and disheartened that Apple chose to go from the prime power and nobility of Tiger down into the pedestrian and rather fatuitous concept of a mere Leopard.

Leopards, with their pelt so disorganized with spots, that they attempt to loft with the name "rosettes," but which merely look like uncleaned spots of schmuck-schmutz.

Ah well. It was a good run while it lasted. Mac was getting better every year, and now, doubtlessly, this is the great tack into the headwind that will kill them.

A leopard. BAH!

Look at the bright side. It could have regressed all the way to a cheetah! (again)

Seems to me like both are adding mostly the same things, or features from other systems that were missing so far. I wouldn't really buy either system if I had the previous iteration, just not enough new things.
And while I'm no MS fan Apple are acting even more elitist than usual this time around.

Of course they are. They're Apple!

MS has Steve "Monkey Boy" Ballmer (http://www.ntk.net/media/dancemonkeyboy.mpg), Apple has Steve "Working 90 hours a week and loving it" Jobs.

Damnit, when are us lynxes going to get an OS named after us?

I feel left out. Especially since we're cuter than all of ya'll other cats combined.* };)

Anyway, I'm loving Apple more every day. Already have a Mac Pro on the way; my entire home setup is going to be Mac on the desktop side now. Apple is definitely kicking ass; this is quite an upturn for the company and computing in general.

MS is non-elitist?
You obviously haven't seen the public presentations MS has been giving of Vista :P

Some of them would be elitist if they could do a demonstration in which their product actually worked.

FWIW, here's the whole story on that (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX8oYoYy2Gc&mode=related&search=).

Also, one of the Macs used during the WWDC had issues, it's referenced in the full writeup. Whether it's software or hardware I do not know.

Incidentally VMWare looks to be releasing its products on the Intel Mac OSX platform too.
I think they heard that bootcamp will be included in Leopard so they need to get some market share right away ;)

Well, VMWare has turned out to (so far) be the most benign ruler of the virtualization market, they were recently named one of the 25 most important technological advances in the last 25 years.

But the market is going to explode soon, everything is geared towards virtualization being the next big thing so they're going to get a lot of competition soon. MS recently made their virtual server software freeware, but their Virtual PC workstation edition is not going to come in a Mac version. So far I only see Bootcamp and VMWare competing for that market.

The Windows market is a lot bigger, tho, but I still don't think MS plans to make Virtual PC freeware anytime soon. They're not aiming at regular home consumers.

Virtual desktop. *Finally*. It remains to be seen how well they implement it; I'm a big fan of CodeTek Studios' VirtualDesktop.

Yesterday a bunch of us were sitting around in the temp cube (a bit open area) admiring the new Mac Pro. My boss asks if I wante one, in a his voice that means 'we could buy you one' (he's very invested in keeping me happy, bless his heart). "Absolutely not," I reply. Everyone looks at me in shock. "Never buy the first one of any new model." I sez. "Wait a couple of product iterations."

Case in point of MS eliticism. MS Guidelines to OEMs on how to make their cases pretty enough to run Vista.

How's that elitism? "Make your PCs look less shitty!". Seems like common sense to me. Now, having a host of adverts that can essentially be summed up with "we rock u suk lol"? That's elitism.
Let's not even bring up those petty "copycat lolz, we made a funny" banners. No class at all.

I'm way out of the loop, I thought it was a bunch of drivers and a boot loader o.o

Systems 6 through 8.1 never ever crashed. :p Nowadays you have to have Applecare or else.

Again, I will say: huh?

AppleCare is mainly about the hardware. You don't NEED AppleCare to deal with any software issues that come up. Not that I've had any come up. At least not with OS/X itself.
