And I'm talking about OS/X Leopard, due out next Spring. Here are some pictures of their banners from the WWDC. (Originally seen at http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/07/apple-mac-pro-hands-on/ and http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/07/live-from-wwdc-2006-steve-jobs-keynote/)

One new feature of Leopard is "Time Machine", also known as "rsync with a graphical front end". It offers version control, the ability to "go back in time", and the ability to automatically store data offsite on a central server. It looks pretty cool, and I'm glad that there's finally going to be version control integrated with the OS.

"Spaces", also known as "virtual desktops" for those who have used X Windows is another UNIX tradition that I'm glad to see in OS/X.

Woo!

Seems to me like both are adding mostly the same things, or features from other systems that were missing so far. I wouldn't really buy either system if I had the previous iteration, just not enough new things.
And while I'm no MS fan Apple are acting even more elitist than usual this time around.

Of course they are. They're Apple!

MS has Steve "Monkey Boy" Ballmer (http://www.ntk.net/media/dancemonkeyboy.mpg), Apple has Steve "Working 90 hours a week and loving it" Jobs.

MS is non-elitist?
You obviously haven't seen the public presentations MS has been giving of Vista :P

Some of them would be elitist if they could do a demonstration in which their product actually worked.

FWIW, here's the whole story on that (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX8oYoYy2Gc&mode=related&search=).

Also, one of the Macs used during the WWDC had issues, it's referenced in the full writeup. Whether it's software or hardware I do not know.

Incidentally VMWare looks to be releasing its products on the Intel Mac OSX platform too.
I think they heard that bootcamp will be included in Leopard so they need to get some market share right away ;)

Well, VMWare has turned out to (so far) be the most benign ruler of the virtualization market, they were recently named one of the 25 most important technological advances in the last 25 years.

But the market is going to explode soon, everything is geared towards virtualization being the next big thing so they're going to get a lot of competition soon. MS recently made their virtual server software freeware, but their Virtual PC workstation edition is not going to come in a Mac version. So far I only see Bootcamp and VMWare competing for that market.

The Windows market is a lot bigger, tho, but I still don't think MS plans to make Virtual PC freeware anytime soon. They're not aiming at regular home consumers.

Is Bootcamp Virtualization?
I'm way out of the loop, I thought it was a bunch of drivers and a boot loader o.o

Well, that's true. It just creates a dualboot system, which is still sort of useless if you have just a few tasks you need to do with Windows programs.
And we've had dualboot programs like that for ages already. As far as I can tell the only reason you actually need Bootcamp for dual booting is because Apple's BIOS deliberately locks people out from putting in a real bootloader.

Hopefully consumers will realize that virtualization is vastly superior to dualbooting.

I've never used virtualization myself (despite having Zen installed), but I so want to =P
Are processors out that allow unmodified hosts to be ran using Zen?

As far as I know Xen only runs modified binaries of other OSs. Any OS you want to run on it needs to be ported (enlightened), which gives a much higher performance than the virtualizations that can run unmodified versions of course, but for the price of more hassle.

If you want to run unmodified OSs on your machine you'll need something other than Xen. Either VMWare for PCs and Linux (which I detailed how to setup in a previous LJ post here) or Parallels like Rusty said if you're using a Mac.

Oh, but Xen can run unmodified hosts now, but it needs some instructions on the CPU that.... I thought no processor offered, but apparently some Intel processors do

And Parallels. The folks at Parallels just announced that they're putting true 3D support into their virtualization product.

Parallels is pretty handy; I use it to run Windows on my MacBook Pro, and to test out various Linux distros.

How's that elitism? "Make your PCs look less shitty!". Seems like common sense to me. Now, having a host of adverts that can essentially be summed up with "we rock u suk lol"? That's elitism.
Let's not even bring up those petty "copycat lolz, we made a funny" banners. No class at all.

"Make your jetliner look less shitty!" says the guy in a $80,000 sports car with half the raw power of one turboprop engine.

This is elitist, because it's someone bitching about looks when looks aren't important. Just as long as it flies as efficiently as possible, what you put on the outside is just a paint job. Of course, I'm one of those odd people who'd rather drive a car that you can't hear coming until it blows past you at 300kph, because if you really want to hurt someone all the way down, noise isn't good enough. You have to break their ego. And you can't do that if you're competing on superficial characteristics alone.

MS giving people suggestions of how to design the physical hardware that will run Vista is hardly eliteism.

Apple, afterall, has always had strict guidelines of how it thinks MacOS applications should look and behave in order to maintain a coherant OS feel.

Apple also has 100% control over how its hardware looks, so it doesn't need to issue suggestions to itself. :P

The endless "lawl windows sux!!11" rhetoric from Apple is really grating. Especially when shit like Dashboard was copycatted from Konfabulator (who stole it from DesktopX, who...), TimeMachine is a feature already existing in Vista...

The Dashboard/Konfabulator stuff is all based on the idea of Desk Ornaments, Apple, 1981.

When Konfabulator was introduced on Macs, it ate too much CPU to be worth running. Dashboard still uses less.

As to TimeMachine existing in Vista: TimeMachine is more than system restore. And it remains to be seen if Vista will ever really be born. Or what's still left in it.

The way to read the rhetoric is this: Steve and Bill have had this little feud going for over 20 years. Windows mavens take their jabs too. I just try to stay out of it; I prefer Macs, but I do work on Windows machines.

At least Apple's announcements are never as dry and boring as that voice recognition video from a prior post in this discussion.

Well aren't semantics fun. I was clearly talking about Apple's attitude to non-Mac users, and while tangenting to "well, MS was making suggestions to retailers!" might be relevant if my words were taken literally and completely out of context it's not all that poignant here.

Exactly. Such is the power of blow. A pity, I tell you, that I should have such a stringent comfort threshold for them.

Good thing there are other countergrump measures of reasonable effectiveness. I've left a +1 Noselick Of Grin A Little on your night table, to be consumed at your convenience. Mind not the slight, gentle bittersweet taste of it; years of experience show it's what really makes it work in the end.
