Are we talking about the same thing? I'm talking about a jabber server called "livejournal.com". Your username is your name here on LJ, and you don't need to "add" anyone. By default, all your friends show up in a grop called "LiveJournal".
I've got that set up at home now, but for the life of me I can't get it to bore through the firewall here at work. Ah well - probably a good thing, that.

If you're using something like GAIM, you can just connect to their chat system through jabber. That's what I did. :-)
