It seems sure someone has gone to the time and trouble to put together documentation on Bob Asher's criminal record and post them online. We're talking multiple counts of mail fraud, "interstate transportation in aid of racketeering", and a single count of perjury.

Those of you who are old enough to remember Budd Dwyer might be interested in knowing that Bob was one of his partners in crime and co-defendant.

Amazingly enough, people still employ this guy as a lobbyist. The mind boggles.

We have a(n outgoing) governor who is 50th in a popularity poll and a convicted criminal whose sentencing was carried live on local TV. That and Coingate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coingate) happened here. Yes, things were even worse here for the GOP than nationally. Bob Ney (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Ney) is from here...ah the list goes on. That's what happens when you have a monopoly on power for a decade-plus.

The GOP candidate for governor was on his knees to the religious right. And not in the pious sense, either. Fortunately, his loss was the worst for a GOPer since...oh, 1912, I think.

Budd Dwyer was amazing. To this date, that has to be one of the single most screwed up things to air live on television. Trivia Bit: Budd Dwyer was a member of the Beta Chi chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity, the same chapter I was a member of in college. Now here's the fun bit. There's a tree planted in the corner of the yard in his infamy. (Not his memory per se, his infamy.) Now this tree is on a corner known for accidents. Here's the kicker. When the tree was young, the cops brought an order for us to cut the top off the tree so cars could see across the odd angle of the intersection. Needless to say, it was enthusiastically done. Something about chopping the top off the Budd Dwyer tree completely and totally made my day, as well as the day of the cop who delivered the order, just to have about six of us bust up laughing, at least when he found out why. :)
