For related reading, I recommend checking out the website Big Dead Place, a satirical look at life and politics in Antarctica.

As usual, the Americans are lacking behind in infrastructure measurements while, thanks to German ingenuity, the _really_ important stepstones get set by other nations:

Behold, the first telephone box ever in Antarctica, been there since 1990! :P

(Seriously, we've had what you could call "broadband" at our Antarctic station since 1998, and the phone service to there is VoIP since 2003. One of my relatives currently is down there.)

Do they have a brewery down there?

I don't think they have a brewery, but you likely can get very good vintage 1998 lager down there.

(Shelf life is largely irrelevant in Antarctica, and it's not unlikely to use up 10 year old foodstuffs down there.)

I took this (http://geog-www.sbs.ohio-state.edu/grads/jdavis/597.html) class last spring. It was a lot of fun; as you might imagine, the instructor (who had been there) had quite a few stories to tell.
