Okies.

[Obligitory Disclaimer: The comments that follow are my own personal feeling, and relate to nothing at my place of employment or hobbies.]

In short, my main objection with this clock is very similar to the complaint I have with the Homeland Security "Alert Status." We've been at level "orange" or "yellow" for how long now? And what good has it really done (rehtorical)? Okie, it made us relatively cognizant that terrorist threats exist, and we have to look for "significant issues." Great. Time to move on. And after a long, long time... the stuff starts to get ignored because it fails to remain relevant.

How is the time related to the doom clock "supposed" to be formed? Well, it's set by the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago. It uses the analogy of the human race being at a time that is "minutes to midnight" where midnight represents destruction by nuclear war.

But here, let's look at the Doom's day clock over the years...

What does it tell me... that we started at 7 minutes to midnight, and we're now at six... and we were at 10 minutes during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962... so, seriously... the mapping means bupkiss, and the relationship to reality is moot. It's worthy of being ignored.

What scientific basis does anyone relating the nuclear weapons issues use to now claim that "global warming" equates to two minutes on the doom clock?

None.

It's nothing to me now but a political rehtoric tool that has no real basis in quantified facts, and yet is placed against a "notional" idea of "time left to live."

OMG, WE ONLY HAVE 7 MINITES OF BREATHABLE AIR LEFT!

*fox waits and checks watch after 10 minutes*

Uhm, right. Seriously, I'd give this more crediance if there was a good scientific basis for understanding of "how" global warming will effect the life span of the livable world.

But, rather than get truths, we all get a "timeline to doom" or the "color code of doom." Pretty sad when we equate life to such values, eh?

My gahds, let's all just sing the doom song!!!

It started at 7 - it got put back when things started to get a bit saner after the end of the Cold War.

About the time it takes for an ICBM missile to reach it's target.
