If you do, something like this might happen:

It's awesome how fast the second officer arrived on the scene.

Chris Rock did a great educational video on that. I swear, that video should be looped every fifteen minutes in various public venues.

Uniformed, strong med with handcuffs in short-shorts. I love this country so much sometimes ^^

I'm glad to see the officers didn't see the need to use any kind of force (other than grabbing the guy and cuffing him.) They did threaten him with pepper spray, but they gave him a chance to comply before they actually used it, and he did.

Those are good cops. Too many bad cops would have tasered, beat, or shot him as soon as he tried to run.

Oh pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease.
Was this ripped from COPS or something? That is so fake. The camera is *right* on the running guy's ass. The camera guy is at the fence before the suspect can even climb it.

There is no way that's real.

It is indeed COPS. The camera guys for that are amazing. They haul ass wearing all that gear and sometimes even outrun the officers. There's a documentary that runs sometimes on Discovery channel about it that shows the camera and sound guys, and how they work.

The parking lot didn't look too terribly big, the cop was right on the dude, and the dude was trying to go over a fence which really slowed him down.

I was under the impression that the COPS show is as fake as any other reality TV show. No police force would accept the responsibility and liability of having a camera man alongside them in dangerous situations.

I seem to recall an interview with one of the creators of the show who said they had approached the police force and asked them to do the show, but it would have been too complicated and too dangerous to do the real thing, so they made a fake show instead.

Oh hell no. Cops has been on the air since 1989 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COPS_%28TV_series%29), way before the term "reality show" was even coined.

One thing that separates Cops from modern "reality TV" is the lack of cash and prizes offered to the participants. Unless you consider a free ride in a police car a prize. :-P

I know it was conceived before the wave of reality shows flooded the airwaves, but that hardly refutes my point.

There's a book called "The Jump-Out Boys" by one of the producers that talks about how they film and stuff. There's also a show I've caught on Discovery channel called something like "Behind The Scences: COPS" which documents how they shoot the show and stuff. Not fake at all. They just make it a point to not get involved beyond shooting the footage. There have been two incidents where this wasn't the case. Once, two cruisers collided, both carrying crew members. There was a bit of footage of the crew members in the back seat slightly bange up. The other one, I think the sound guy knew CPR, so, put down the boom mike and helped perform CPR on someone. There was a guy on LJ that was a cop with a department that had COPS along. They left after something like a month because they didn't have enough good footage. He deleted his lj quite some time ago, and I don't recall the name.
