What a week

So, my parents are in the hospital. Both of them.
Tuesday afternoon, my mother (
music4fun) began suffering stomach pains and vomiting. She was rushed to the ER, and a day later, the doctors figured out the cause: gallstones. She's scheduled for surgery to remove her gall bladder this Friday.
My father had a surgery scheduled early this morning. It was an elective procedure which involved scraping some bone off his hip and fusing his ankle with it. This was due to some pretty nasty arthritis in his ankle that kept getting worse and worse over the years. The problem is that it required two specialists to coordinate their schedules and plan this months in advance, so he couldn't just skip it.
All things considered, my parents are doing well given the circumstances. Family members are checking in on my mother up in Allentown, and I've been checking in on my father, who is down here in Philly. One of my aunts is a Registered Nurse, and she has been a BIG help throughout all this.
The main effect of this on me means that I'll have less free time to get random stuff done. Oh well, it's only an inconvenience, and far lesser than what I'm sure my parents are going through right now.
Plus, I get to see my parents soaring high on morphine, which is kinda fun to watch. :-P

Date: 2007-06-28 06:55 am (UTC)The last time my dad was in the hospital after surgery we thought he was getting addicted to morphine. He kept pressing the button over and over again to feed it in through the IV.
We later learned the IV was disconnected from the machine the whole time, and every time he pressed the button, morphine just spilled onto the floor. O_o

Date: 2007-06-28 11:34 am (UTC)My mum also has a 'bad ankle' and severe arthritis problems, she once considered the procedure that I think your dad is having done. (fuse the bones together) She opted out at the time and I don't know if she's going to consider re-considering it. At the time she figured "I still have a good lot of mobility and it's only mild pain from time to time" -- but she also said "I'll see in another five years"... and its' been at least that.
I'll have to ask her.. but send well wishes on all our behalf to them. Let them know that next year they can't use the hospital excuse to duck on helping out at Anthrocon. ;)
