Things ER docs learn from their patients
Aug. 1st, 2007 02:59 pmIf you have a giant cyst on your face that is scheduled for surgery, might as well just pop it anyway to save time. Of course, the resulting staph infection might be a bit of a problem...
If you are easily grossed out, do not watch this!

Re: Just for the sake of us curious ones...
Date: 2007-08-02 02:54 am (UTC)There's a triangle of blood vessels that go from the bridge of your nose and down along your cheekbones. There's a lot of them, and they're VERY close to the surface, and can be very easily damaged.
What happened is this guy probably ruptured one of those blood vessels and it carried some of the infected material to the other side of his face.
The other thing is that if you watch, he's got infectious materials ALL OVER his hands and face! That stuff is viciously dangerous, and he's just smearing it on his face like it was pudding or something.
Your average zit isn't that bad, but a boil like that is full of really nasty bacteria that will eagerly colonize anything they can get.
If he'd used proper surgical technique, he'd probably have been just fine. Scrubbing before with Betadine and using gloves, having someone CATCH the ejected material in some gauze, and wiping the area with disinfectant after each squeeze. Then irrigating the hole with 15% saline and keeping it covered with a drawing salve such as ichtammol.
If he'd done that, he'd probably have been fine. If he didn't rupture any blood vessels, that is.
As it was, he was lucky he didn't get meningitis.
