The only reason they're in low volume areas is their CPUs take too long to rasterize most postscript generated these days. ;)
Heh, I have a (3-year-old) LaserJet 1320 at home, and it it's pretty slow to start up...although they claim 20 ppm. It has a 133 MHz SPARC CPU if I recall correctly...
I think it only has PostScript emulation though, and I believe it's much faster if you feed it PCL...
I'm not sure I understand the difference between "emulating" postscript and just "interpreting it".
Postscript is just a language. To rasterize postscript you basically "execute" it just as you would any other program. Unless "non-emulated" postscript printers have a dedicated chip to exec the postscript, versus software running on a general purpose CPU of some sort.
And in fact, if I remember right. That message means it wants you to load Letter paper (because the computer has requested it) and some other size is currently in the feed tray. Normally one presses OK and it just prints it anyway. o.O
I just saw this comment after I posted mine. We still have a handful of those kicking around. Man, those were built like tanks, they just don't die. The 4m's are maybe 12-15 years old now. Try getting that out of a new laser printer today.
i have one in my forensic lab. XD apparently some other division was using it and they were planning on taking it when they switched floors, but my coworker not-so-kindly informed them that it belonged to us so we snagged it. i hooked it up to our mini-network and the damn thing went chugging away. it's so old, it's discoloured.
Bleah, I always get that message when I want to print something in a hurry (darn I typed furry and had to correct it!) and there's junk in front of the printer.

OMG...it's an HP LaserJet 4! That printer is 15 years old now! I also worked with one just this week! *boggles massively* What are the chances?!
What it means is that you are either out of paper, or have the wrong size paper loaded...problem solved! I won't charge you anything for my technical help now, because you are also furry like me and you showed me your Pokemans as well ;> You has a very nice Mudkips!

Anyone who can clear this up? :)
