Seattle's 'S.L.U.T.' just a trolley ride

SEATTLE, Washington (AP) -- Officially, it's the South Lake Union Streetcar. But in the neighborhood where the new line runs, it's called the South Lake Union Trolley -- or, the SLUT.

At Kapow! Coffee, a shop in the old Cascade neighborhood, 100 T-shirts bearing the words "Ride the SLUT" sold out in days, and another 100 are on order.

"We're welcoming the SLUT into the neighborhood," said Jerry Johnson, 29, a part-time barista.

Some claim -- incorrectly, according to representatives of Vulcan Inc., the company that is developing the area -- that South Lake Union Trolley was the original name and that it was changed when officials belatedly realized the acronym.

This article was pointed out to me this morning by co-worker D.

All I can ask myself is, WHAT were these people thinking? How could you have a transit system with that sort of name and not even have it occur to you what the acronym actually spells out!

The official SLUT page is at: http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/stcar_slu.htm

You know, even if the officials rename the system, the locals will be calling it the SLUT for the rest of time.

The jokes are endless, "How'd ya get to work today?" "I rode the SLUT"

"Yeah, the six of us had to squeeze into the SLUT this morning, man was it crowded."

Makes me think of a story which may (or may not) be true, about the naval training units on various universities in Great Britian prior to and during World War Two, with names on the pattern [name] University Naval Training Squadron, and the abbreviation of same printed on their cap-tallies. One such unit was supposedly Cambridge University Naval Training Squadron.

I don't think I can look at that link from work. The webfilter probably swallows it.

I was listening to the local "Jack FM" station here in the Seattle area, and they had the following bumper between songs:

"Hop the slut, and ride it home. Jack FM."

I assume they're referring to this.

Finally, a 100% safe way to ride a SLUT to work.

Nevermind riding the S.L.U.T., when you can now buy the S.L.U.T. instead!
