I had some furs over last night for a little get together. I ended up underestimating interest and had a total of 11 guests. Anyone who has seen my living room knows that 12 people jammed into it means it is pretty well packed. I'll post pictures later.

Had a bit of stress on Sunday when I woke up to find my iMac G5 non-functional. Seems that it blew another power supply. That's twice in 2 years. Based on Davin's advice, I packed it up and carried it down the road to the Apple Store. Apple's silly little concierge system said that they would be unable to see me until Tuesday, but the nice folks at the apple store put me on "standby", which involved me sitting around at the Genius Bar for about 20 minutes until the tech became available. Once he was able to take a look at my Mac and verify that the power supply was bad, he replaced it on the spot and my machine worked again.

The good news is that I had 5 months left on my AppleCare plan. The bad news is that I was hoping to get another 2 years out of this machine. I'm going to be grumpy if I have to replace the power supply a third time. (I've never blown a power supply on a PC. Not even the generic boxen I bought in years past.)

Other than that, things are going well. Got my apartment cleaned up and booze put away. (somehow I'm left with more than what I had to begin with..) I'm looking forward to getting back to my day job tomorrow.

Sounds like some good times; crazy stuff will happen when you mention "booze" to furs!

That's no good about the computer, however. It seems newer technology is gettin' less and less reliable as the years go by.

I mean on my good ol' pc I think the worse I had to change was one of the fans..

power supplies .. especially if it's the second time is pretty bad ..

what do you think causes it?

I asked the tech the same thing. He suggested that both power supplies might have been bad.

It's no big secret that the iMac G5s have had power supply issues, unfortunately.

The best advice I've ever heard for protecting quirky power supplies is to get a high quality power conditioner and uninterruptable power supply unit to isolate it as much as you can from any troubles that could otherwise harm it.

well, if you've got an expencive one, why you worried, they guarentee the protection for life of the unit, you can claim further apple repairs under them

Not that I'm aware of.

Last time I checked, APC only guarantees their stuff from lightning strikes. And the coverage is more oriented towards replacing an entire system and not a $80 power supply.

I was thinking something with a real function, instead of glitz. Though this is the perfect thing the next time I find somebody who wants to spend money on a silly one that has useless features, instead of one with a reasonable amount of battery life.

Speaking of what I do need a new one, power goes out here every time the wind blows...

I've seen a lot of blown PSUs on PCs. Especially Dells, because they throw these 250W specials in their computers and expect them to be able to handle a load...

They are barely enough to power the computer, then, when they get older, they just barf, and I usually end up buying another one off Ebay, that's much more powerful than needed (like 400W), but that leaves room for growth.

I've rarely seen PSUs go on Macs...and for one to go more than two times like that...Are you running anything more in or attached to your Mac that could be drawing more power than the PSU is capable of supplying?

It's also possible that you just got a lemon...

The PC I just built has a 1KW power supply in it. Before anyone says overkill, I would like to point out that 2KW versions are available right now.

Actually, take a look...

You might be able to find it for less if you really search around though...

Wow, I was pulling that number out of my a** and I was a bit on the low side LOL. Newegg has great service, and great products though, and their prices are reasonable, so I don't think you overpaid for that. Still, some whole computers sell for the price of that PSU alone...

This new system is very close to absolute top of the line...it is scary how much it cost...
