i don't know if there is a way, i don't like them but they come in many sauces, which one did you get oil? vinegar? water? tomato sauce? hot sauce? other?
i used to eat em when i was a kid. as i got older and realized how horrible them smelled, i wouldn't go near them. as a vegetarian, now they're not even a possibility.
but i've bought them for my cats, usually mixing them in recipes or just mixing it in with their dry food to get more oil in their diet.
my dad and i used to eat them just out of the tin. i'm not sure if there's any other way to eat them outside of that. try googling "sardine recipes" maybe?
either way, i've relegated them to the level of cat food and even then i rarely buy them since they stink so badly. >_<
Been reading about diets in general, and one of the problems in Western societies is that we don't get enough seafood, or more specifically the Omega-3 fatty acids they contain.
That aside, sardines are actually pretty healthy. They have other good things in them like protein and calcium.
When I was in Italy, they served them to us with butter and onions (and with hefty helpings of both). Personally, I couldn't bring myself to eat them (as I have an aversion to eating something that can look at me while I'm doing it). But, apparently, that's a popular way to do it.
I love sardines, but would never eat them by themselves. Reconsider putting them on pizza; if it's fat that you want to cut out, experiment with low-fat toppings.
Or take the advice of people who suggest them with cheese and crackers (which is, really, just a mini-pizza :) ).
Or anything else, really: That they're so often paired with pizza suggests that you want to accompany them with a starch (dough), a fat (cheese), and a piquant flavoring (tomatoes). So for example you could try them on spaghetti, or bagel and cream cheese with tomato, or something similar.
I just read the thread on shitty_advice and have to say -- in all seriousness -- maple syrup is a good idea. The sweet and salty will go well together.
BTW, I would tend to discount as "health food" anything with that much salt. Maybe shell out five bucks for the damn capsules instead. ;)
Oh man, I loved them as a kid, just ate them with some fresh bread. Not had them in yeeeeeeears, I wonder if I'd still like them. Sardines and tuna are some of the few fish I liked.
Ahhh That's a good reason. Since I don't eat them, it's hard for me to think of a good way to make them taste better. All I can say is Ice cream and milk, then blend into a yummy milkshake! *suppresses a gag* *hugs* Good to see you at AC, even though I was in a bit of a compromising position!

Re: P.S.
Date: 2008-07-06 05:00 pm (UTC)The ones I had only had 200 mg of salt. For the amount of protein (and lack of saturated fat) that it provided, I'd say that was a good tradeoff.
